Release Notes

We are excited to roll out release 0.5 of ActorFx. This release contains a number of improvements, roughly categorized as:
  • Stability: Made several fixes that eliminated deadlocks and race conditions
  • Diagnosability: Some additional ETW event types are now emitted
  • Scalability: Implemented port sharing and per-node assembly caching
  • Inter-Actor Programmability: Added the ability for actors to create and delete other actors
  • Extensability: Did some refactoring and added a StatelessActorApp that will enable us to implement alternative persistence mechanisms (Azure Tables, SQL Azure) in the future
  • ... and numerous other small but important changes

Note that there are a few BREAKING CHANGEs in this release:
  • IActorPromise.Result has been changed from an object to a (json) string
  • IAsyncList has been changed to IListAsync

Finally, we have updated the underlying Actor Runtime. If you have an old version of ActorFx installed, uninstall it before installing this latest version. This means:
  1. Uninstall the old Actor Framework
  2. Uninstall the old Windows Fabric (another name for the Actor Runtime)
  3. Install ActorFx 0.5
  4. Upon running the ActorRuntimeManager, you will need to (re-)install the Actor Runtime, just like you did the first time that you installed ActorFx and ran the ActorRuntimeManager

As usual, the "Actor" file is a project template that can get you started writing up your first actor application.
