Release Notes

We are excited to roll out a new release of the Actor Framework. This new release will allow you to deploy a cluster on Windows Azure. Since our last release, we've done the following:

Enabled Azure deployment
Please follow directions for downloading and using the Azure Plugin.

Many Reliability and Networking fixes
  • Continuations on IActorPromises work better.
  • Significantly better error handling for network problems, including adjusted timeouts and retry logic.
  • Better error handling on the server side for problems.

Performance work
  • Added an AddOnce method to our List actor, eliminating one of two network hops in a common scenario.
  • Embraced async methods more fully. Look at GetActorProxyAsync for a good example.
  • Delay-loaded our JavaScript and IronPython language packs.
  • Refactored as a down payment on future significant performance gains.

Updated dependencies and Azure SDK
  • Improved version of the Actor Runtime's replication support.
  • Please install the Windows Azure SDK version 2.0.

For anyone who has installed any previous versions of the Actor Framework, please do the following steps before running setup:
  1. Uninstall the Actor Framework, using the Windows Control Panel's Uninstall Programs option.
  2. Uninstall Windows Fabric, using the Control Panel.
  3. rmdir /s "c:\Program Files\Windows Fabric"
  4. rmdir /s "c:\ProgramData\Windows Fabric"
Those steps will help avoid some subtle installation problems trying to start the Actor Runtime or deploying services.

Please let us know if you're using the Actor Framework, or are looking at it for your applications. We'd like to hear about your experiences!
